I know it’s the apocalypse, and everything has already come crashing down.
But even in this brave new world, I still feel like I’m the other sister, referred to in the possessive: Harlow’s shadow. Vanessa’s keeper.
Because my older sister is a commander.
And my younger sister is the Chosen One.
Charlotte Holloway has seen the world end twice. The first time was when the guy she liked started dating her older sister and she thought that was the worst thing she would ever suffer. Charlotte was wrong. The second time was when the Crimson started infecting people and turning them into cannibalistic monsters. Her parents fell victim, and now Charlotte lives in a protected compound with her sisters, Harlow the Commander and Vanessa the (secret) Chosen One who will save the world. When enemies seeking the Chosen One raid their camp, Charlotte makes the choice to save her sister (and potentially the world) by pretending to be the one they want. However, as time goes on and the lies slowly untangle, Charlotte has to learn to break free of her bonds and decide her own fate.
This novel is incredibly original for essentially being a zombie apocalypse novel - it manages to combine pirate history, apocalyptic what-ifs, and romance into a captivating novel that I couldn't put down. Blair could have gone down the usual path of “government experiment/virus gone rogue destroys world”, but instead choses a supernatural curse caused by a misogynistic man trying to force a woman to marry him. This curse is incredibly addictive to read and had me chanting“You will not choose my end, for this heart is mine.” in my darkened bedroom at 2 a.m.
Despite the plot promising a love triangle plot, there actually isn’t much of one - Dean is rarely there in actuality (just in thought) and honestly, I think it is for the better. Unchosen is a fiercely feminist fantasy and works so well with Charlotte longing for Dean until other events (*hmmm hmmm*) drive him out of her mind. So if you are looking for a purely angsty love triangle, I would recommend you read something else. However, if you are looking for literally anything else, you have to read Unchosen!
Are you still not sure about reading Unchosen? An apocalypse and badass sisters and pirate revenge isn’t enough to persuade you? Dang! Well, if you like these books:
Elysium Girls, by Kate Pentecost
The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea, by Maggie Tokuda-Hall
Last Girls, by Demetra Brodsky
Agnes at the End of the World, by Kelly McWilliams

I live in LA, drink way too much coffee, and write all day long -- because I'm crazy blessed to do what I've been doing for fun since I was a kid hiding in my garage loftwriting terrible, terrible vampire stories. Glitter enthusiast. Bethyl shipper. Pluviophile. Ask me about my Dean Winchester obsession. John 1:5.
I'm wife to Ross and mom to Aryn, Liam, and River Grace. Also, mom to Cricket (a dog, not an insect), Maximus Dogimus Meridius (a ferocious cuddlebug) Maggie Rhee (cat, not the bad ass from The Walking Dead), and Kovacs (no parenthetical needed for him).
