*I received an e-arc from Netgalley free of charge, and my opinions are completely my own.*

I take a sip and imagine the British boys I might meet on my trip. The thought is intriguing. I’ve been too caught up with Crystal, Andy, and anyone from Waterford posting memes about me to think about boys...but what if I could find a British boyfriend while I’m studying abroad? Someone way better than Andy. The possibilities spin out in front of me. Dates to romantic castles. Walking through the streets of London hand in hand. Kissing someone who calls me love. It could be the thing that redeems me after that horrific party. It could be what makes this semester truly epic.

Forget Andy. I want a hot British boyfriend.

It is an universal truth that if a girl is publicly rejected by a boy she liked and then humiliated by a viral video of the event, she can only escape it by fleeing to another country. In Hot British Boyfriend, Ellie is hoping that her semester abroad in England would help not only to put some distance between her embarrassing past in America, but also to redeem herself with an amazing British boyfriend. For once, luck is on her side - almost as soon as she ventures out into the nearby town of Northampton, Ellie meets handsome Will, a British boy who seems to have stepped out of a Jane Austen novel. But since he is sophisticated and charming, Ellie is sure that he wants a different type of girl than she is - which is why she strikes up a bargain with Dev, a fellow classmate, to teach her all about the things that Will has an interest in. If he helps her with her love interest, then Ellie will help Dev with his. In this whirlwind romance, true love is never quite what you expect.

I adored the way Boyce wrote Ellie! So many young adult books have written their protagonists as boy-crazy girls who have literally no other motivation or personality beyond that, and I was afraid that Boyce would go in the same direction. You can imagine my joyful rebuttal when we meet Ellie and get to know her more beyond the first chapter. Ellie’s tendencies toward thinking about romance a lot makes sense - she is a teenager and surrounded by couples and has adored Jane Austen novels her entire life. However, we do get to move past that to learn more about who she is as a person. She loves fairy gardens; she isn’t super great at school, but tries; Ellie is a good friend to those she enjoys being around. By the time that I put down Hot British Boyfriend, I felt like I knew Ellie intimately and wanted her as my own friend.

This book is an ode to Anglophilia and Austenphilia in all its glory. After reading Hot British Boyfriend, I immediately went to fill the hole in my heart caused by Kristy Boyce with other Regency-based media such as Pride and Prejudice and began drinking English tea with milk and sugar in an effort to prolong the bookish feelings within me. Hot British Boyfriend makes me want to crawl back into the British tv-show phase that I had in high school, and try to refine my faux British accent into something palpable. It is as close to traveling to England as we are going to get in this pandemic, all while remaining on your couch (and alive).

For my Book Look, I decided to try to copy Ellie’s look on the cover. It took me a good while, but eventually I was able to find her shirt after endless searches on pink puff sleeve mock turtlenecks (hint: the exact color is Turkish Rose, if you are looking for a similar shirt). The rest of the outfit was pretty simple after that. I got my shirt, skirt, and necklace chain on Amazon, while the shoes came from Modcloth.
